On this day in 1940: Promising his people nothing but blood, toil, tears and sweat, Winston Churchill replaces Neville Chamberlain as British Prime Minister. Churchill is to form an all-party war government as German troops storm Europe.

Did You Know?

Monitor M33's aft gun is the last remaining piece of ordinance surviving from the Battle of Jutland.

Admiral Horatio Nelson paid from his own purse for the Mediterranean Fleet to be painted in the distinctive ochre and black colours, as a measure to help prevent friendly-fire from his own ships.  This proved so successful that the Admiralty immediately adopted the scheme for the entire fleet.
